  • Update June

Well - I've nearly been here for 3 whole months now - so I thought I'd give you an update..

hmm - ok well I feel like I'm gradually settling in here, everyday things now seem a bit easier and less confusing!!! It's gradually been getting hotter and hotter here (my desktop weather widget tells me that it's been 29oC today - but that may be a bit on the low side)... though I've been enjoying(??) my daily competion to see just how big the sweat patches are on my shirt at the end of each day!!! (Japanese schools don't have aircon and fans seem to be used only when you're nearly hot enough to faint!!) - ho hum! I'm enjoying teaching in the schools anyway - most of the kids are great, and are a lot of fun!!!

As a church plant (which has a name incidently - Grace City Nagoya!) we've met properly a few times now & they've all been great times, though we're aware that something annoying always seems to happen to at least one of the team on a sun (so that's one to pray about)... a family from South Africa (Danielle and David Fraser) came out to join us the week before last and the plant as a whole seems to be beginning to nit together as a community which is cool and very exciting...

Last week I went to see Grampus 8 play at the Toyota Stadium (which is amazing), grampus also played slightly better this time too - they drew 2-2 (photos are here)

I also went to visit Nagoya castle the other week (Photos are here)

  • My weekend in Tokyo

Well apart from the fact that I'm now exhausted last weekend was brilliant

On fri after work i went on the shinkansen (or bullet train) to Tokyo - it's amazing! - It's surprisingly smooth and spacious (there was probably nearly a meters worth of leg room before the seat in-front of me!).... I then got a train to akihabara (the gadget capital of Tokyo) which unfortunately was just shutting down for the night -  before checking in to my capsule hotel...(click HERE for photos).... I actually really enjoyed it - the best way I could describe it is like sleeping in a rigid plastic one man tent... but I didn't find it claustrophobic at all - mind you they're quite big at 1m x 1m x 2m, so I could sit up etc.. so probably no worse than the average bunk bed.....

On Sat I went with my housemate to Tokyo Disneyland -
(click HERE for photos) I don't think I've seen so many people in one place in my life!! it was properly rammed but it was a really good day and the electric light parade was really quite something....

Sun - Nilesh and myself went up the Tokyo tower (Click HERE for photos), the middle station (150m) is ok, but the bit at the top (250m) is really quite impressive.... After pegging down the stairs from the 150m level (there was a long queue for the lift, and we running late) we met up with all the other guys from the church plant and had lunch together... before going off to Jesus Lifehouse church which is a church that started in 2002 with a similar sized team and is now around 250-300 members strong... it was really good to see a bilingual church working in action!!

Sun evening Matt Redman was in Tokyo as a part of his Asian tour for the evening, doing a concert on the other side of the city... Being very used to CCK, worshiping with several hundred people again was really refreshing and a welcome change... Matt led excellently and finished a really nice weekend off before jumping back on the shinkansen to Nagoya....

  • Photos added...

  • The night our appartment block caught fire!!!

Erm yep - we kinda'of thought something might have been going on when we heard a lot of noise outside - we thought there must be a big fire somewhere - it was only when I went onto the balcony I noticed the 10 Fire Engines, Ambulance, Fire Control Unit, etc. etc. parked outside... I think that they MAY have slightly over-reacted (I didn't actually SEE any smoke or Fire) but it kept us all amused for a good hour!!

  • Grampus 8....

I went to see grampus 8 play this evening - it's the Nagoya football team that Arsène Wenger managed for a bit and gary lineker used to play for.... I think they may have had a bit of a fall from grace since then - i reckon I could probably get on their squad now... they lost 4-1 but it was the first 10 mins that most amused me - you could tell where the ball was by where the most players were!!!

Click here to get the pics..

I also booked shinkansen tickets today for friday - I'm off to tokyo this weekend (i'm very excited about this - i remember the shinkansen used to be my favourite card when i used to play top trumps: trains with my brother cause it beat everyhing else!!!!) - Matt Redman's also in town doing a concert on sun evening - so i'll see him too!!!! oh and i'm going to stay in a capsule hotel on the fri night!!!
